Once the system is chosen, the fun part starts: deciding what the floor actually looks like. The two finishes we install most are full-broadcast flake and metallic epoxy, and they suit very different spaces.
Flake floors are built by throwing vinyl chip into a wet pigmented base coat until the surface refuses to take any more — that's what 'broadcast to refusal' means. We then scrape the loose chip back, vacuum, and lock everything under a clear top coat. The result is a multi-layer floor with real texture.
That texture does three useful things: it hides patchwork, crack repairs, and minor slab imperfections; it adds natural slip resistance without any extra additive; and it disguises the everyday dirt of a working garage far better than a solid color. With dozens of chip blends available, most homeowners can match cabinets, walls, or shop branding closely.
Metallic epoxy works completely differently. Reflective pigments are suspended in clear resin, poured, and then moved with hand tools and air until they separate into the marbled, three-dimensional pattern the finish is known for. No two floors ever come out the same — and no one can reproduce yours exactly, including us.
Metallic belongs where people look at the floor: showrooms, salons, retail, entryways, offices, and high-end garages where the slab is part of the design. It's smoother than flake, so in a wet or wash-down area we add a slip-resistant additive to the clear coat. It also demands a flawless substrate — metallic reveals every high spot and repair underneath it, so prep time runs longer.
A simple rule of thumb: choose flake when the floor has to work for a living, and metallic when the floor has to be looked at. Plenty of clients do both — flake in the garage bays, metallic in the finished shop or showroom next door.
